Today I made a trip to the Temple Gun Club to shoot my new Kel-Tec RFB. RFB stands for Rifle Forward ejecting Bull pup. It uses FAL metric 20 round magazines and shoots .308 Winchester or 7.62X51mm Nato rounds from an 18-inch barrel. The overall length is 27 ½ inches and it weighs about 8 pounds. The RRFB comes with no sights; however, it has a Picatinny rail for mounting sights. I put a Barska 3-9 scope with red or green cross hairs. I do not know how to put the sling on the RFB as there were no instructions with the sling, and the manual refers to those instructions.
About 120 rounds later, I love this little rifle! Recoil is much less than one gets from a bolt action rifle. The accuracy is still unknown since mostly I shot Wolf ammo and that is not very accurate. Initially I had a lot of problems. The rifle would not pick up the next round and usually would not lock the action open after the last round from the magazine. Once I looked in the manual, I found the answer. The gas port is adjustable, and I had not followed the instructions. As soon as I did what was plainly written in the manual - closed the gas port one notch at a time while inserting one round in the magazine, I found a spot pretty far from where I started and the rifle functioned flawlessly from then on. In my RFB, serial number 75x, the gas port is opened four notches for Wolf ammo and six for German DAG ammo.
The Barska scope is far from elegant, and I ended up going to the 25-yard line to get on paper. It was seven inches low and three left at that range. It was off the paper at 100 yards. Now it will at least hit the paper next time I go shooting. I will most likely replace the scope with something better. Maybe a dot sight and a magnifying accessory. Later this week a couple things are coming from Brownells. One is a top-notch muzzle brake. The one on the rifle looks just like the one on current M-4 carbines, except it is threaded 5/8X24 instead of 1/2X28.
The RFB comes with one metric magazine. I bought some more even before I got a phone call telling me the RFB was available. Brownells sells a spray paint which I used on most of the magazines so now they are a dark earth brown enamel. A Sharpie pen was used to number the magazines in case one or more go bad on me. I can isolate it and probably junk it. You can find video on You Tube of the RFB being shot (not my video) and good pictures on the Kel-Tec web site.
